How I finally made personal training a habit: lessons learned

Struggling to maintain a consistent exercise routine is a common challenge. In this blog post, I share my journey of how I transformed my personal training experience from fleeting attempts to a sustainable habit. By understanding my obstacles and making simple adjustments, I found a way to integrate fitness seamlessly into my life.

The struggle with consistency

For years, I attempted to establish an exercise routine, but most of my efforts fell short. I often missed one or two sessions, and that became the tipping point. It was surprising how hard it was to return to my routine after just a brief absence. I realized that it wasn’t about a lack of motivation; rather, it was about the overwhelming feeling of failure even after minor setbacks. This pressure compounded when I felt disconnected from my training environment or trainer, making it hard to stay committed.

Understanding my needs

Life’s unpredictability played a significant role in my fitness journey. With a busy schedule, including a nine-year-old and a traveling spouse, I required flexibility in my training. The pressure of missing a session shouldn’t feel like a financial loss or a source of guilt. I needed a setup that allowed for adjustments without stress.

Key changes that made a difference

This time around, I approached my training differently. The first key change was my daily routine. Instead of going home after dropping my child off at school, I restructured my day to flow directly into coffee and work at a café, followed by personal training. This eliminated the decision fatigue of whether to go to the gym or not, making it a seamless part of my day.

The environment matters

The training space is crucial. I now train in a small studio that feels comfortable and private, with only a couple of other clients present. Large gyms made me feel exposed and uncomfortable, which often deterred me from returning. A welcoming environment made it easier to show up, especially on days when my energy was low.

The role of a good trainer

Having a supportive trainer also played a significant role in my success. My trainer not only possesses the necessary knowledge but also creates engaging and personalized sessions. He adjusts the training plan based on my needs, whether I'm preparing for a ski trip or managing an injury. This customization fostered a sense of support rather than rigidity, encouraging me to keep coming back.

Embracing flexibility

I learned that I could adjust training days and times, even at the last minute. This flexibility is essential, as life can change rapidly. I discovered that the hardest part of exercising is not the session itself but deciding to go. By removing this friction, I made it easier to integrate my training into my life.

Key takeaways

Consistency in exercise is not about perfection; it's about the ability to return. I realized that missing a session does not invalidate my efforts. Instead, it’s part of my rhythm. I now focus on making my habits easy to repeat and embrace the necessary adjustments. If you find yourself struggling with fitness habits, remember that it’s not about being motivated all the time. It’s about creating a routine that fits your life and allows for flexibility.
